so last night was the W.I.L.D. (Walk In, Lay Down) concert. Artists performing: Kid Beyond, the Sugar Hill Gang, DJ Unk, and..... LUPE FIASCO.
if you have known me for more than a day, you know that i have a deep, deep love and respect for Lupe. ad last night, i was FRONT row.
let me try to tell this from the beginning.
my friends and I were roadies for W.I.L.D., thinking e might get to see him. it was a lot of hard work, but it was cool. Kara, Dionne, and I got to the Quad just before 3, but they didn't need any more help, so we just laid down in the hall parallel to the Quad. at 4, we staked out our section for the concert... juuuussst to the right of the stage and right up front. Kid Beyond was pretty damn awesome. Sugar Hill Gang played their songs, some other oldies, and some songs that had sampled their work. i got a t-shirt from them and i'm probably going to give it to Kim. DJ Unk.... ehhh. he only did two songs. his part was wack. i wouldn't see him in concert again.
AND THEN THERE WAS LUPE.
he came out on "Touch the Sky" (yes, by Kanye) and did his verse. then, if i'm not mistaken, he did "Sunshine" and it was dedicated to MEEEEEEEE (yes, to me... he looked at me and said it was for me... but my head was turned because i was screaming how awesome it was to my friend Wanda and he turned to the girl next to me... BUT... it was originally dedicated to me. hmmph.). He did "I Gotcha", "Superstar"... OMG... HE DID "SWITCH"!!!! it's a mixtape song, but it's one of his best songs... and NO ONE in my area but me knew the lyrics, so i was rapping along ith him like my life depended on it.. and he came over to my side of the stage and looked dead at me and was pointing at me and we rapped the lyrics together. he did "He Say, She Say" and it almost made me cry. He did this AWESOME song where he had the instrumental to the Gorillaz's "Feel Good Inc" and he rapped over it and then played air guitar, lol. of COURSE, he did "Kick Push". he did "American Terrorist" and dedicated it to George W. Bush, "the President of American Terrorism". he did PART of "Instrumental", but he stopped it and said we needed to get more hype... so then we did and he did the whole thing. he did "Daydreamin'" and let the crowd sing the chorus and Jill Scott's ad-libs.
it was so awesome.
afterwards, because we were roadies, my friends and i helped take down the stage and stuff. i was already tired from being on my feet for five hours (plus dancing, jumping up and down, screaming, singing, and rapping). for our work, we got pizza (i downed four veggie slices from Papa John's... i hadn't eaten in hours) and the chance to take whatever was left from the courtesy food they had for the Sugar Hill Gang. Dionne took a ziploc bag full of fried chicken, Kara took a sandwich platter, and i took a half a case of Coca-Cola, a bottle of cranberry juice, and one and a half bottles of grape juice. we were going to carry it all back to the 40, but we were really exhausted, so Kara flagged down the campus circulation bus and let it take us alllll the way around campus before we got to the 40, but we didn't care.
to top all that greatness off, i fell asleep on the phone with Mikey, which was really the buttercream frosting, whipped cream, and ice cream on my Oreo cake, lol.
i don't think yesterday could've been anymore perfect.
pAce.
